Snow/Weather
Mother Nature beats to the sound of her own drum; we have no control over snow. We do know that the race is a go regardless of the conditions and weather—and that it will be a whole lot of fun. We’ve raced in blizzards, sub-zero temps, warm temps, and soft snow. That’s just how it goes. We make no claims or guarantees of snow, or trail conditions.
Why
Fat biking is fun and challenging. The tires are big and goofy. Those big fat tires love snow. Riding on snow is either smooth and dreamy, or one of the biggest challenges you’ll ever face on a bike. We put on this race to pump up fat-bike stoke.
Proceeds
Race proceeds go to the Blackwater Bicycle Association, which advocates for cycling in the greater Tucker County, West Virginia area. BBA promotes open trail access to bicycles, helps with trail maintenance, and organizes quality cycling events like this fat-tire race.
Common Questions:
What kind of bike do I need to participate in?? You must ride a fat bike with 3.8″ or larger tires.
What if I don’t own a fat bike? Trail Labs in Canaan Valley and Blackwater Bikes in Davis have fat-tire rentals available to reserve all winter.
Is it timed? Yes!. We will post the results and hand out some fun awards.
What is the race length? The planned race route is about 12 miles long with 4 laps on a 3-mile course. The course will be groomed and marked. Total elevation gain is about 1,700 ft. The cutoff time is generous. We reserve the right to change the course and length at the last minute if conditions warrant it.
What if I am not the “racer” type? Not a problem – enter for the fun and camaraderie of it. Think of the race as a chance to ride kick-ass groomed trails with new friends!
What about the weather? Chances are good for snow cover on this date, but if there is no snow we may adjust the course as necessary. Stay tuned to your email and social media for updates on the race situation as the event approaches.
How do I stay warm? Ride hard! Watch the weather. Dress appropriately in layers. If your feet get too cold, walk, but walk to the side of the groomed trails to avoid damaging the surface.
What if I register but can’t ride?? We will miss you but, sorry, registration fees are non-refundable. Registration can be transferred through your bikereg profile. In the unlikely event we have to cancel the race, your entry will be refunded.
